ফিরে এলাম

এই blog টি বহু দিন update করা হয়নি. পড়াশুনার কারণেই হোক আর অবহেলার জন্যই হোক অনেক দিন কিছু post করিনি. আজ হঠাত কিছু লিখতে ইচ্ছা হচ্ছে. যদিও লেখর মত বিশেষ কিছু নেই. তবু অনেক দিন পরে আমার ছোটবেলার diary টা ওল্টাতে ওল্টাতে বেশ ভালো লাগছিল. পুরনো দিন গুলো ফিরে পেয়ে এক তা অদ্ভুর feeling হচ্ছিল. তাই মনে হলো কিছু বিশেষ ঘটনা না ঘটলেও এমনিই লিখি. অনেক দিন পরে হয়ত নিজের এই blog টা খুলে দেখতে বেশ ভালো লাগবে. তাই এখন থেকে এখানে বাংলায় লিখব ঠিক করলাম.
এখন আমার M .Sc . এর final year . আর এক বছর ও নাই আমার college +university life এর. খুব কম কয়েক জন ছাড়া department এর senior most স্টুডেন্ট ভাবতেই কেমন একটা অন্য রকম লাগছে. আবার একটা দুশ্চিন্তা, বা বলা ভালো চিন্তাও হচ্ছে.. যদি এর মধ্যে একটা ভালো চাকরি না পাই? সবাই জানে এক বার pass করে গেলে department এ আর কোনো যাওয়ার জায়গা থাকে না. তখন কি করব? শুধু শুধু বাড়িতে বসে থাকব? হয়ত বেকার এই সব ভাবছি. হয়ত সব ঠিকঠাক মতই হয়ে যাবে... তবুও... UPSC পরীক্ষার ৪ মাস আগে দাড়িয়ে এই চিন্তা তা হচ্ছেই.

We did a field work around Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh.

There we had a fruitful lithologic and structural study.

I am now busy with preparing the field report.

So I'll continue this post after the report is finished.

Picnic to Diamond Harbour

I have become very late to post the update. On the 6^th of September, '08, we visited Diamond harbour. This was our departmental picnic as we did at Gadiara last year. The place (DH) is beside the river Ganga, a good place for picnic. The riverside is very beautiful, there is also a very old fort which is almost in the river. The only problem for us was high sunlight. We were almost burnt in sun.

Maithon Field 2008

In January 2008, we, the students of UG1 Geological Sciences, Jadavpur University went to Maithon for 14 days. There we had to study the lithological and structural geology of the area surrounding the campsite near Maithon dam.

The first four days were spent learning the basic techniques and operations essential for geological field work, like use of clinometer-compass, map reading etc. Two days were spent visiting the Maithon dam and Ramnagore colliery. The entire batch of 32 students was thereafter divided into five groups and the area into five sectors.apter: The groups were then left on their own surveying the sectors one at a time for the next five days. Classes were held every evening to discuss the day’s work, inspect the rock samples collected and clear any doubts that may have risen during the day.

The region is not directly accessible by train. The nearest rail station is Barakar, situated 8 km from Maithon. It is also frequently accessed through Asansol or Ramnagore rail stations.
Regular bus services ply to Maithon from Dhanbad, Asansol and Barakar.
Local transport in the form of auto-rickshaws, trekkers are also available.
We however went to Asansol from Sealdah by Balia express, wherefrom we hired a bus to Maithon.

The region belongs to the Chotonagpur Plateau region and has an average altitude of approx. 200ft. The river Barakar marks the western boundary of the working zone. There are several hillocks about 700-800 ft. high in the northern part while the southern part is relatively plain with some undulations.

:::Objective of the field:::
14 days were spent studying the area in and around Maithon with the following objectives:
i) To learn the fundamental methods like measurement of attitude of beds and foliation of rocks, map orientation, plotting locations on map etc. which are essential for geological field work.
ii) To identify rocks and minerals in their natural surroundings.
iii) To learn to establish a relation between different rock-types seen, based on observations only, and from an idea about the chronology of the geological events that occurred in the region.
iv) To collect some samples from the field for laboratory test.

:::Visit to a dam and reservoir:::

· Purpose: irrigation, hydropower, flood control, industrial and public water supply.
· River = Barakar; catchments area = 6294 sq. km.
· Year of commencement of work 1951
· Year of completion 1957
· Dam type = Earth fill gravity with concrete gravity
· Spill way maximum high above the lowest length at the top of the dam
· Non-over flood = 4603 m
· Spill way = 186 m
· Total volume of cement:
(i) Concrete = 244,000 cubic meter
(ii) Earth = 3,930,000 cubic meter
· Spillway: Type – controlled OGEE
No. of water radial gates – 12 nos.
Maximum discharge capacity – 14,160 cumec
· Reservoir: area at F.D.L. 107 sq. km.
gross storage capacity 13,69,200,000 cu. ml.
effective storage capacity 736,400,000 cu. ml.
· Power plant type: underground
· Hydraulic head: 39 M
· Maximum discharge 204 cumec
· Installed capacity 60 MW
· Generating units: Type – Horizontal (France)

Capacity – 20 MW each

:::Visit to a Coal Mine:::

Ramnagore Colliery
The Ramnagore Colliery was previously owned by the Indian Iron and Steel Company (IISCO), the oldest iron and steel concern of India.

Iron ore and coal are the main requirements for the manufacture of iron and steel. Accordingly, IISCO owns 3 coal mines and 3 iron ore mines.

Ever since the merger of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and IISCO, all the mines and factories are owned by SAIL since 1.04.05

A total of 13,800 people work for IISCO or now SAIL of which 3,800 people work in the mines and 10,000 people work in Burnpur factory.

The Ramnagore Colliery is established on 2,838 acre of leasehold land which extends from the highway to a little beyond G. T. Road and from Kalyaneswari to Barakar.

The total coal reserve of Ramnagore colliery is about 11,438 m. which is 0.1% of India’s coal reserve.

The Ramnagore colliery is has 16 coal seams up to a depth of about 650 m. All of the 16 seams are mine able seams. The uppermost seam is Begunia. We visited the Laikdin seam. The Salanpur seam is presently closed. Each of these seams is named after the village where its surface exposure was found.

The dip of the coal seams is about 9-10. We were told about the presence of an up thrust fault in the seams of the colliery which raised the seams by about 27m. This reduced depth highly reduces mining costs.

:::Geological History of Maithon:::

Interference from Sector wise survey:

The northern part of the area surveyed was formed of only metamorphic rocks. The southern part, more precisely, southern halves of sector 1 and sector 2 contained sedimentary rocks. Thus we find a lithological boundary between sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.

This lithological boundary indicates a time-gap or UNCONFORMITY, between the formation of metamorphic rocks and deposition of sediments.

Occurrence of XENOLITHs in sector 5 & 4 indicate that the metamorphic rock originated from igneous rocks.

The quartzite found in sector-2 is however sedimentary origin. Sandstone probably got metamorphosed in contact with the igneous intrusion

This igneous intrusion though horizontal, is probably not a sill for it contained folded quartz veins.

Weathered metamorphic rock was mostly found the north-western part, which probably indicates longer duration of exposure.

Igneous dykes found in coal seams indicate a second period of tectonics, which probably tilted sedimentary succession and unconformity.


Interpretation about geological history of MAITHON:

The Maithon region is part of the extension of the Chota Nagpur plateau formed of Precambrian metamorphic rocks. Extensive igneous activity led to the formation of the plateau. These rocks were then metamorphosed to form the rocks we find today.
The amphibolites-gneiss and granite-gneiss found are part of these Precambrian basement. The basement was then uplifted due to tectonic activity which opened up a basin for sedimentation. The basement rocks develop the deformations probably during this upliftment.
The tectonic activity took several years to occur during which time no sedimentation took place. After this time-gap, sedimentation took place and thereafter, digenesis which formed the sedimentary rocks. These sediments are part of the Gondwana sediments and much younger than the basement rocks.
The sedimentary rocks also show layering, each layer corresponding to a definite time period. The khaki-green siltstone found is a part of Talchir boulder-bed. The coal seams found further south belong to the Barakar formation.
It is assumed that two igneous intrusions occurred. The first igneous intrusion, mark by the expansion by the igneous melt along the axial planes of the neutral folds occurred during the uplift of the basin. The second igneous intrusion occurred after completion of the formation of the sedimentary succession, simultaneously with another round of tectonic activity which tilted the unconformity to its present position.
The horizontal igneous layer and the lamprophyre dyke were formed during this second intrusion, which changed the adjacent forming quartzite and jhama coal respectively.

Tour to Bhutan

In the Puja days, we had a small trip to Bhutan. We started from home on 18th Oct... the day of Saptami. It was raining heavily... with the natural traffic jam of puja days. We had a tension. But the train was very late... however.. the train left Kolkata at about 4:30pm.
We reached NJP on the next morning. We had our bus there and reached Malbazar, where we had our breakfast. The bus reached Phountsheiling (border) in the afternoon and we board at hotel Sinchula.
The next day expended in journey to Thimpu... through a very bad road. We reached our destination in the evening and chilled in the sudden cold. Hotel TT was our place there. Next day, too, was in Thimpu.... we completed the site scene there... and shopping too.
Then we started for Punakha and reached almost in the evening. We went to the Xzong.... a wonderful Goldy place. Full of natural beauty.
The last two days in The land of Thunder Dragon was in Paro. A sweet place... and a beautiful hotel..

Last place to visit was Gorumara Tiger Resort...

Rakhi

Yesterday (28th August, 2007) was "Raksha Bandhan Utsav". Sisters tie a (or may be more) "Rakhi" around their brother's wrist. This is a day of reminding the beautiful relationship between brothers and sisters. My elder sister, like every year, did not leave me... and my neighbouring sister (Rami), whom I love more then myself, invited me to celebrate with her.
Brothers do not only take the "rakhi"... they also give some gifts to their sisters. I gave Rami a Barbie... look.... how happy she is...!!

Kamalesh da's Annual Function

Last Sunday was the annual function of my former Math teacher... Kamalesh da...
The evening was very colorful... with dance, songs, recitation... and of course... prize distribution.

Yes... prize distribution is the most exciting event of the evening...
Our teacher awarded his students who scored the highest in the tests that he took.
And also to the very successful students in the board exam...

Students who gained 80% or more, were given a book,... and those, who got 95% or above in Mathematics... were given a Titan Sonata Watch...!

Nothing to say more... only some of my favourite performances are enough to enjoy... I think:

Departmental freshers welcome

Hey......
After a long time I am here to write....
Today we had freshers welcome from our department... one of the most important day in the first year...
The programme started at about 1:30 pm... and continued up to 6:30 pm.
The program started with a speech by a senior student... and followed by a song by our friend... Subham.
Teachers... N.M. (HOD), Sudipta Madam.... and others... gave their valuable lecture...
We introduced ourselves and were given a gift from the department...
Then a quiz contest started...
each UG1 and new PG1 students were given 10 questions... and among them 5 team... each of 2 students were formed... this contest selected Mr. and Miss fresh... those are Abhishek and Nibedita didi...
The lunch contained Fried rice and Chili Chicken...
Naturally... I had only first one.

The most interesting part of the day started then.... ex-tempo.....
We were given separated subjects... and had to say for 5 minutes...
Those subjects were really funny ... and hard to explain really....
However... this part continued a long time... and the program ended with a very beautiful recitation by Adrita......

Now in Jadavpur

Presidency is the start of my college life. But I am a student of Jadavpur University now...
I was admitted on 17th July and at the first day, seniors caught us. They gave us a question paper full of funny questions... we had to answer those.
Next day, there was an arrangement of orientation for science students in the university. The heads of various departments came and expressed their love to the students, they also reminded us to keep the goodwill of the University.
The students... both seniors and new comers told some words... among them.... I was the first to tell.
Then, after that program, we went to our department. The departmental teachers introduced themselves... and we too.
Then the most exciting episode started... ragging.
But it was not too much as the word is...
It was a funny interactions between juniors and seniors. They called every students.... and told various things.
The previous day, when I was given that question paper..... I wrote that I love to sleep. The seniors told me to sleep there... and I had to lay on the floor.
They wrote a song and I had to sing that in the tune of a popular Bengali song... Nemesis

After that day, there was no such incident. We had become students of the university and the seniors... even the teachers are becoming our friends.....

Class starts at Presidency

Our class at Presidency college started yesterday... but that was an introduction... the classes started today. I went to college at 10 a.m. but there was no class in the 1st period. The second class started at 10:50 a.m. This was a class of A. K. Chatterjee. He said about various lines of Geology... such as Structural Geology, Physical Geology, Petrology etc. He did not teach anything in detail... as it was the first class. The class ended after 50 minute. The next class was of Dr. S. Paul. He will teach Petrology... and started in brief. As this was the first serious class, I am interested to describe it...
The Word "Petrology" comes from two Greek words... "Petras"(Rock) & "Logas"(Knowledge)... As the subject is related to rocks... we should remember the three main types of rocks... those are Igneous, Sedimentary and Metamorphic.
He told about Metamorphic rock and the subject or stream is called Meta-morphology... and its key word is metamorphism which is "change".
He then described about Basalt in brief... which I am not writing. If the readers request, I shall then add those.
Then, there was no class till 2:40 p.m. So we... five friends went to The Indian Coffee House. I ate a plate of Veg. Sandwich and a cold coffee. The practical class then started.. by A. K. C.... as there was no theoretical class, there was problem to do any practical work. So there was a short introduction about it and we left the college after a short while.....

Flood by one-day rain

My home-town is Birati.... my locality is Adarshapally.... the area, where I live, is very down place. Every year, after a heavy rain, we sink in water. There are two canals beside this area... one is very long.... but not so deep... and other one is a canal... beside the rail-line. These canals overflow every year and are stretched in the whole area between them. As a result, we go underwater.... even the water comes inside the houses.... and makes the rooms very dirty. The water do not want to go out... Generally this little flood happens in September... but this year, it came in the first heavy rain in July... So we are very afraid to sink again in the scheduled time...

Cultural Evening

1st July... the birth as well as last day of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. In the evening of this day, I spent the time in a cultural programme... at our local area. The MLA of DumDum, Rekha Goswami was present in the program.... and an upcoming tollywood actress Mouli Bhattacharya was also present. Child and other artists performed on the stage. I had the digicam there... But I had only 256mb memory card... so, I could not capture much... but of course a small clip.......

2nd

Today, RJ Purbasha of Friends 91.9 FM discussed about 2nd. Yes, we all are rushing to achieve the top. But it is true that the man who is not at the top, rather just down the first, is not unhappy at all. Our rush to the top is making us much busy, we can't expense tine with our own people, and this target is making us tensed and unhappy too. Again,, if there was no 2nd, we could not understand the first. So 2nd is not bad, rather good.

Who is dangerous?

'Husband and wife' is a common subject of gags. In these jokes, husbands are sad that they have married. But it real life I can see no such incident. Rather it is a daily news of any newspaper that housewife died, or burnt, or hanged. My mind asks me is it a plan of men to suppress their insulting works on women!!
